Mission: The mission of the GEAR UP TN program in Henderson County and Lexington City Schools is to provide an exceptional level of information, programmatic, and counseling services to students and families in an effort to increase the rate of students who attend postsecondary education after high school. The program asks students to think of enrolling in postsecondary education in the context of not if they will attend but where they will attend.
Vision: the vision of the GEAR UP TN program in Lexington and Henderson County Schools is to make each student and their family members aware of the importance of higher education and provide them will the tools and knowledge necessary to obtain the education of their choice.
GEAR UP – What is it?
GEAR UP is a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and stands for: Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. The purpose of the program is to provide information to students and parents on all aspects of college admissions, financial aid, scholarships, etc. for the purpose of increasing the number of students who attend a university, community college, or technology center upon graduation from high school. In Tennessee, the most recent GEAR UP grants were awarded to 15 county schools systems through a competitive bid process. The Henderson County and Lexington City grant focuses on current 7th grade students in Bargerton, Beaver, Pin Oak, South Haven, Westover, and Lexington Middle School.
How long will GEAR UP services be available in Lexington and Henderson County? GEAR UP is a 7 year program and provides services to the Class of 2018 until their first year after high school. Each year of the program will bring a new focus of high school and/or college planning and will build on the previous years’ points of emphasis.
What specific services will GEAR UP provide? Although a new emphasis area will be in place each year, some general examples of services provided by the grant include: career planning, financial aid planning, college visits, special speakers, and other events designed to highlight the advantages of obtaining an education after high school to both students and parents.
